In celebration of the kick off of the NPPA Multimedia Immersion workshop in Syracuse, NY and the resurrection of this blog, Evan Vucci and I produced this silly music video about being multimedia journalists.
Stay tuned for more updates and educational multimedia goodness from the NPPA workshop this week.

Top 10 Takeaways - Multimedia Immersion '09

It’s been roughly a week since I returned from the NPPA’s Multimedia Immersion workshop in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a week of intense multimedia training from smart leaders in online journalism from around the country.  I didn’t post nearly as much as I wanted to while in Vegas due to a combined lack of [...]

Multimeida Immersion 2009 – Day 3

Multimeida Immersion 2009 - Day 3

Multimedia Immersion 2009 is well under way as we enter into day 3.  The students have learned a lot about storytelling methods and techniques for shooting video.
Today gets a little intense as we introduce most people to Final Cut Pro for the first time.
Of the roughly 50 students, most paid their own way in an [...]

Vegas Baby!

I’m off to Vegas today for a week of non-stop multimedia fun at the NPPA conference in Las Vegas.  I am one of 25 coaches for a Multimedia Immersion workshop. The other coaches are some of the top multimedia minds in the country.  Vegas hasn’t seen this much talent in one room since the Rat [...]

Film School 101

Film School 101

Doing a presentation on visual storytelling for our weekly staff meeting, and I thought I would post some links that correspond to some of the basic topics I am covering.
For starters, lets talk about the very core of storytelling, montage theory.  That’s right, welcome to film school 101.
Russian film director and theorist Sergei Eisenstein (and [...]

Globe and Mail – A deadline approach to GM

Globe and Mail - A deadline approach to GM

the Globe and Mail takes an interesting approach to the GM story here. A couple of text slides go by without enough time to read, but its an interesting backgrounder on a story, without a lot of time to turn it around.

A weeks worth of video links.

I was out of pocket most of last week learning how to survive in hazardous environments from the fine blokes at Centurion.  It was a great week, but  I was deprived of a high-speed Internet connection and was unable to watch any online video.  Since I’ve gotten back, I’ve been digging into a lot of [...]

MediaStorm – Driftless in Iowa

MediaStorm - Driftless in Iowa

MediaStorm has a new project, Driftless: Stories from Iowa, that is tied to a photography book by Danny Wilcox Frazier of the same name.  The entire project and its many chapters are in black and white, a choice I assume is meant to match the black and white photography of the book that is inter-cut [...]

NY Times – Ozier Muhammad’s Harlem

NY Times - Ozier Muhammad’s Harlem

The opening line to this post on, Lens,  the NY Times’ new photo / video / multimedia blog is spot on in setting up this audio slideshow about Harlem.
Perhaps the most meaningful assignments for photojournalists are the ones they give themselves.
You can definitely tell the photographer had an intimate relationship with the neighborhood he covered [...]

Adam Westbrook – One week in Iraq

Adam Westbrook - One week in Iraq

Recently exchanged emails with radio reporter for Bauer media, Adam Westbrook, about his ambitious multimedia side-project oneweekinIraq.net.
He recounts a lot of his approach at Tracy Boyer’s Innovative Interactivity. Essentially, Adam was assigned to go to Iraq for a week to do radio reports on the final days of the deployment for British forces based in [...]

Globe and Mail – The OHL experience

Globe and Mail - The OHL experience

I can’t get enough of hockey right now.  These Stanly Cup Playoffs have D.C. in a tizzy.  As of right now, the Caps and Pens are six games into an exciting series that will end on Wed. night.  I bought tickets for game 7 and paid more than I have ever paid for a single [...]

MediaStorm – Multimedia Philanthropy

Maybe it’s the troubled economy or the struggling newspaper industry, but Mediastorm has been on a tear lately with loads of good advice for multimedia producers.
Eric Maierson first posted 10 ways to improve your multimedia work now. A great list of ways to avoid some multimedia cliches and sharpen the overall presentation.
He now follows up [...]

EPpy awards – notable video work

EPpy awards - notable video work

Editor and Publisher has announced its winners for the 2009 EPpy awards.  The two projects that stuck out to me were:
Left Behind by the San Jose Mercury News
Really strong and inspiring visuals.  Makes me want to run out the door with my camera just watching it.
Talking to the Taliban by the Globe and Mail
This really [...]

Wasington Post – Voices from the recession

Wasington Post - Voices from the recession

Great piece from the Washington Post just launched. The first video is about a food bank at the Ambassador Baptist Church in S.E. Washington D.C.  I like that they are previewing the next two videos to come.
One on bartending school on May 8
and another on foreclosure auctions on May 11

Solid multimedia on the Drug cartels (en Espanol)

Solid multimedia on the Drug cartels (en Espanol)

Some realy great work from clarin.com on the drug cartels. My Spanish is pretty rusty, so I didn’t understand everything, but It’s a testament to the visuals and intuitive navigation that you can move through this interactive and learn a lot without even speaking the language.  Definitely worth some time.

Sydney Morning Herald – Wives of war

Sydney Morning Herald - Wives of war

Great interactive display of three videos profiling the women who stay behind while their husbands go off to war.  The videos were all shot on the Canon 5D.   The background noise is distracting in some spots, but the stories are interesting, and the photography is very nice.

Gaylord college video training

Looking to expand your skill set in the new world of multimedia journalism?  Gaylord college has a handful of free video tutorials that can get you started with a lot of the latest software used by multimedia professionals.

Dallas Morning News: At the edge of life

Dallas Morning News: At the edge of life

When I was in Dallas doing a workshop with photographer turned documentarian David Leeson, the DMN had just started this ambitious project.  The high contrast black and white film noir shooting does create an interesting theme throughout this series.  Definitely worth a look.
Thanks to multimedia muse for raising this to my attention again.

Kids with guns

Kids with guns

Haunting audio slideshow of children playing war by Tim Hussin. The photos are incredibly strong, but the skilled audio editing really drives the mood of this piece, and the association with warfare.
Kudos to multimedia muse for the link.

Playing Catch Up

A handful of great links that I missed this past week while working on the road.
Tracy Boyer at innovative interactivity unloads a bevy of great links for any multimedia enthusiast out there.  It’s essentially a list of lists.  (How does she find the time to cull all these links?)
Some great advice from John Gross. [...]

NY Times - One in 8 million

Great visual storytelling from the NY Times in their “One in 8 million” series.  Posted via multimedia muse.

Neiman Labs – Enjoy what you do, or else

Interesting thoughts on what skillsets online reporters should have.
My favorite is the idea that if you have reporters who don’t enjoy what they are doing, that it will come through in such a personal medium.
